Project Overview
The East Tennessee Kidney Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps support individuals living with kidney disease across East Tennessee. They offer a variety of programs designed to make kidney disease treatment more affordable and accessible so that those living with kidney disease can get the care they need.
Our goal was to redesign and expand their existing website. Their old website had not been updated since 2018. Since then the East Tennessee Kidney Foundation has developed more programs and partnerships that they wanted to showcase on their new website.
In order to achieve this goal we had three main objectives – update the design style so that it was more modern and user friendly, expand on the existing website content to reach more audiences, and encourage the community to get involved and support the East Tennessee Kidney Foundation and their mission.
Key Takeaways
Know Your Audience
When we originally started this project we knew we wanted to make sure that those living with kidney disease would be able to easily access this information so that they could get support. Overtime we realized that there were other audiences we could include that could benefit from this information.
We expanded our audience to include the general public and focused on providing resources to educate them on the risks of kidney disease and how they can help fight kidney disease by volunteering to be an organ donor.

Communicate With Your Client
A lot the communication between myself and the client for this project occurred via email and through a chat thread. Although this was great for sending information and updates to one another it made the revision process difficult.
In order to effectively receive feedback and make edits I would meet in-person with the client. We would go through the website together and I would make any changes he requested in real time.
We would also use these meetings to brainstorm new ideas for how we could expand on the existing website and display information in different ways.
This allowed for me to receive valuable feedback and for us to get the website done quickly and efficiently.

Understand the Problem
Prior to this project I had heard the words kidney disease and kidney failure but I was not familiar with what they really were and why it was important for me to know about them.
One of the most important things I did during the process of developing this website was research. I looked for more information so that I could educate myself on kidney disease and better understand my clients mission.
My research led to us adding some new pages to their site that focused on highlighting and educating others on the risks of kidney disease. It also helped in creating a page informing the community about how they can help by becoming a kidney donor.
